Illumination gave us more animation with animals in the main role. This time we have a bunch of animals with their life problems and dreams.

The movie starts with Buster Moon, a young koala, who falls in love with everything about theatre and gets enough money to buy his beloved theater. Nonetheless, the business is not going well. He decides to run a sing contest to save what is left, with a “generous” reward for the winner. This is when we are introduced to the other main characters, all having different personalities and paces of life. The story line is well-known - characters are given

a chance to change their live, all doors are opened till they hit the rock bottom. Then they have to raise up, get stronger, open up and walk forward. Simple enough for kids.

The animation is appealing. There are fluid movements, characters, depends on their species, have their own way of moving. For instance, Meena, the elephant, flattens her ears whenever she doesn’t feel confident or Rosita, the pig mother of twenty-five, who walks with small steps, straight, insecure … well, at the beginning. All the characters, by the way they move, show their personality.

Although I loved the animation, there is, in my opinion, few flaws. The design of the characters from same species are sometimes too similar. I was twice confused with the characters. Gunter – Piggy Power – is too similar to Rosita’s husband, I actually thought he was the latter until he presented himself. The same occurred to me with the bouncer at the disco; he is an ape similar to one the ape in Johny’s Father’s gang.

The studio has also done a really good job with the dialogues rather than ‘gag’ actions. Also the characters like Mr. Moon’s extremely old chameleon assistant or Japanese’s dancers were droll. The chosen songs were nicely interpreted and matching with the character’s emotional state. Despite all of that, I would make an exception with Beyonce’s song in the chasing scene in the club which I didn’t like, "Run the World (Girls)"... girls... Not an arrogant mouse running away from angry bears, which in comparison to other songs and timing just doesn’t match.

In my opinion there are also two other issues with the movie. One father-child-relation-drama for a movie is enough but this time there are two. First, we have Johnny who just wants to find himself, follow his own path and be appreciated by his father. Right, this is nice. Secondly, Buster Moon – optimistic and deluding himself – who gets his theatre with the money collected by his father and his father only. I find that this was unnecessary knowing that later, he is failing to manage his businesses and looks for other ways of getting support, but never gives up! All of that to say that maybe one day someone loaded will see how visionary are your ideas and might help you to achieve them.

Overall the movie is nice. We are given divers characters in different stages of their life. Action. Singing makes it even more enjoyable and appealing. You can't be bored.

Gutierrez, director, Annie and Emmy Awards winner related his life story; how he managed to create and released his recent movie, Book of Life. He started his career in the California Institute of Arts and later he developed the series El Macho and El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. As he said, Gutierrez always put his own experience into his work, therefore, in El Tigre, the main character was young and confused as himself. Also he didn't hesitate to turn down an offer from Disney Studio. Later he explained how he got an offer from DreamWorks to make his own movie (based on the script of Book of Life) but he turned down the offer. Why somebody would say no to DreamWorks? Because the studio wanted to make the movie their own way. It wouldn't be a Mexican inspired world but a New York environment with confused, blonde, young, female character. Gutierrez moved on and he <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">finally<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">got an offer from Real FX Creative Studios with 50% of the budget and the rest was found thanks to Guillermo del Torro. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Later on, another problem appeared when the studio wanted to change the ending and the director got an ultimatum: he had to change the ending or there would be no money for marketing. In the end agreement was reached and some changes were made.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Milk the cash cow - yes, it sounds harsh but being honest, if you need to run your company, you need money and you cannot lower the price or sicken your client with yourself.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Never have debts in equipment - I think that nowadays, with banks restricting loans and a never ending economic crisis, working only with what we can afford is not a bad idea. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The company started they adventure with creating 3D software, motion graphics and broadcast graphics for TV stations. We could see how 30 years ago all calculations, measurements were made by people where now everything is done by software. In the 90's PDI focused on CGI and started developing their first 3D animation and at the same time they were bought by DreamWorks SKG. PDI's first feature film was Antz. Who ever followed DreamWorks on the markets, knows that 3 years ago company had some big lost. In <i style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Pearl Harbour<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">, they created new techniques for light and smoke; also, <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">during the Japan attack over USA, <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">planes and some of the ships were CGI, whereas the rest were just big miniatures. For <i style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Harry Potter <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">movies, the studio made a new engine for fire and in <i style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">Dragon Heart<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> (1996) they were challenged with facial expressions. Now <b style="font-family: "helvetica neue", arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">ILM <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">focuses on VR technologies.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At the first panel Mark Osborne introduced us with his private journey with the book Little Prince. The book followed him all his life. He
likes so much the story that at the beginning he refused to create a
movie based on A.de

amazing movie combining stop motion animation and 3D. It wasn't a
secret that producers were seeing this movie made only in 3D but
fortunately the makers could present the parts of the book as a
paper-fragile world. Only the concepts were made in France and rest
of a production in Montreal and Ottawa.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Obligatory panel for every fan of Star Wars. It was part of celebration of Light and Magic's 40th anniversary. Lorne Peterson presented us some of his work. He has done models and miniatures for all six Star Wars movies. Funny fact, in all movies G. Lucas used models, even if he wanted to push CGI in parts 1, 2 and 3, e.g. the Lava's scene on Mustafar at the end of episode 3. It is a huge amount of work, and models had to be destroyed during shooting (explosion...) but Lorne did not feel sad or bad, it was just part of a creative work.

The panel presented an idea by Woman In Animation (WIA) to try to increase the amount of women in the animation field. The goal is to get 50% of female employees by 2025. There were presented statistics from USA and France about how many women study animation and then work in the industry. For example in USA there are only 10% producers/directors or 23% in animation; whereas the statistics are looking better in France. WIA doesn't want to discriminate males employees, because anyway, skills remain important, it's just to make a point and notice a problem.

I have to change it!!!

First, please find link to my animation, which I made for my master degree.
It took me around 10 months to create plot, storyboard, character design and later model my characters, rigs, background, animate it ...

https://vimeo.com/78758742

In next posts I want to share with you my knowledge (about Autodesk Maya) which I gathered during my studies. I hope it will be helpful.Beahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203224230607587802noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8353275515598228032.post-87700227635355995982013-02-06T15:40:00.001+01:002013-02-06T15:40:44.043+01:00"From script to screen"
Exploring further my knowledge of animation I came across a book called "Animation-from script to screen" Shamus Culhane.

This is an interesting position for the majority of people that start their adventure with animation, but anyone can read it.
There are lots of tips on where to begin their work on the film, what to do during your project, for example, carry a small notebook to write everything that you can think of. Sometimes in the past while I was walkking on a street or sitting in a bus, I came up with an idea and later at my home I could not recall it .
One of the more interesting quotes is "animation has a definite limitation in its exploatation of animals and human beings". He was writing about gags that in real life they can be funny but in a film- not.
Hybrid 2D with 3D animation have been offten used since discovered the capabilities of 3D. Slowly, in small steps, was introduced more and more computers to traditional animation. Examples are:

Mulan

Treasure Planet

For my animation I decided to use a mixed technique. Closer to me is the 3D world, but few times I've done some 2d animation so I know what I can achieve in every technique.

My 3d model for my animation

We have to ask ourselves, in our animation, what is easy to do in 2D and what is easy to do in 3D. For me, it is better to do 3d model and animate it, and the background will be in 2d. Something that has more details is easier to do in 3D, static things or which contains a few lines are easier to manipulate in 2d.
There are other questions:

are there technical challenges,

what will be the best media for our film,

what style is the best to tell the story and if we can achieve that style with 2d/3d?

In my opinion you should have knowledge about 2d and 3d separately otherwise you will spend time to learn new things. Of course it is positive to improve knowledge but what if you have close deadline of your project? There is no time.

When we want to achieve some effect or style, we have to experiment and keep our researches. The great combination of 2d and 3d is "The Paperman" the last Disney's short animation. You can check on interenet how they first built everything in 3 dimension and later, using special program, they painted stuff directly on CG.

The Paperman

For everybody I recommend the book:

Focal Press

This is a very interesting book that can help us solve our problems with the film, can improve our animation and even has a few tricks.

The book is perfect for everyone regardless you have made a hybrid animation or not. As the author says, you have to do a research and the research should be an inspiration.

Firstly characters: how they will look, what they will be wearing and later how they will move. It is hard to imagine movement before we have established the personality and apperance of the characters.

So first rough sketches and next we develope our characters and finally we know how our character/s look like.

This is my characters for animation.

Later we create character sheets. Can be in color or black and white. It is better when we see character, at least, in 3 viewa. Ofcourse can be more. Every time proportion of the body need to be the same.

On this site there are lots of character sheets and it is good to see how professional artist make them.

http://animationarchive.net/

I also reccommend the book "The Art of Hercules: The chaos of creation" S.Rebello and J.Healey. There are pictures of characters how they looked at the beginning and how they developed them.

Some time when we search for something on internet we can find some unexpected stuff which can be very inspired for us.
Once I discovered Anton Pearsons portfolio. He is a designer and somebody could say what animation has to graphic design? Who knows. I really like how he mixes colors. It is really amazing I can stare at those pictures and analyse them all the time.
Why do we need storyboard?

In the past I thought that I don't need to draw what I want to animate because everything is in my head... it is not true. We should make sketches of everything that come up in our head. With storyboard we can organise better our work and will show the key frames of our film. Storyboards are used for animation movies and also for live action films.

We need storyboard to compose frames, how they will look like, what will be on scene, who will appear... We have to decide which type of frame we will use and there we have:
a master shot which show us all the place and characters where the action will occur,
a full shot which show all the character,
a medium shot which show from characters hips upwards,
a medium close-up which show character face includes shoulders,
a close-up which zoom on characters face.
With storyboard we show other people of our staff camera movements, it angles, zoom in or out. The storyboard should be readable for everybody (of course everybody should use a little bit of imagination...). It doesn't matter what is the style because every artist is individual so don't worry about it, it is necessery to have drawing skills and before making storyboard, know basics about perspective and human or animal anatomy. I discovered that take photos or film is a really good way to have references.

We should decide the frame size and later start with roughy, sketchy storyboard and letter make clean up, draw bigger frames with more details. I also reccommend have a break for few days and put sheets of our work on a wall or on a floor and see it one more time. Sometimes we can notice that same frames are missing, that some action is going to fast or to slow.

This is one frame from my final storyboard

For everybody who wants to know more about storyboard design I reccommend "The Storyboard design Course" G.Cristiano
Animation can make us think about different topics, topics that are important for everyone.
You have to only watch closely to see symbols, metaphors and interprete them correctly.

Animation which can quickly move.
Watch "Pull"

Watch carefully to see how the authors decided to tell the story of the contemporary world, the events that have taken place and still have ... The animation is great and full of symbolism.
It is possible to tell a nightmares story with using animation. We do not need expensive special effects to receive a great film which can frighten us.

Once more puppet animation can be frightening...
Watch "The Plague Bearers"

Old fairy tail with new plot...
Watch "Red"

Terrifying horror film that forces us to think...
Watch "The Backwater Gospel"

Once more time: old fairy tail with new ending...
Watch "Little Red"

The two animations that are not horror, but rather a thriller...
Watch "The Cat Piano"
Watch "Crow Moon"

Animation do not have to be colorful and pleasant. Animation can say every kind of story from comedy, drama to horror. They can suprised us with the end of film, with an idea for story or with an idea for realization.
Horror animation is only for people who can stand this genre and they are scary as same like (good) live action movies.

Beahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203224230607587802noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8353275515598228032.post-3062928930431770122012-12-08T16:18:00.002+01:002012-12-08T16:29:48.918+01:00Video clips
On internet, on TV there are lots of different video clips but I will focus on this clips with animation which really impressed me.

Well I don't have favourite technique in music videos but it is amazing for me when people use pixilation for create a film. You can make abstract situation for characters. Imagination don't know barriers.

Watch "Her morning elegance" Oren Lavie

Watch "Easy way out"

Watch "Krzyżówka dnia" Monika Brodka

Puppets are also used in video clips and they can tell really moved or horror stories.

Watch "Let it go"

Watch "Sober" Tool

But the most amazing thing for me is when music is synchornized with animation. I love watchin video clips where movments follows the rythm.

Watch "Up in the sky" 77 Bombay Streets

Watch "Fell in Love with a Girl" The White Stripes

Watch "Heartless" Kanye West

Watch "Hearts like heaven" Coldplay

Watch "Le Cafe" Oldelaf

Watch "Apache"

And at the end video which is a beautiful memory and a nod to the history of animation, Fleischers studio. A combination of contemporary times and the past.

Watch "Dawned On Me" Wilco & Popeye

All in all every technique of animation were used. The only problem is our lack of imagination because with those techniques we can create really excellent and beautiful videos.

When I reminds myself how animation looked like in my childhood, every film was very accurate. For feature films animation was great, very fluent but for TV, animation was not precise.
In my opinion right now animated series for kids are impoverished in style, details, they are simple but I discovered nice film with perfect animation. Everything in this movie is matched: animation, plot, character design. I was really pleased.
This film is for kids but I think everyone can or rather should watch this animation. During 30 minutes you can't be bored, you will enjoy this movie with Gruffalo's child.

Watch "The Gruffalo's Child" trailerBeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203224230607587802noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8353275515598228032.post-55441149269654868892012-12-05T15:18:00.001+01:002012-12-08T16:22:18.825+01:00BAF part2
Being at the festival I had the opportunity to see a variety of animation, not only did I get to see the use of traditional/contemporary techniques, but also the way animators used these techniques to tell a story.
3 movies impressed me:

"Bon Voyage" Fabio Friedii Watch "Bon Voyage",

"Bear me" Kasia Wilk Watch "Bear me",

"Oh sheep" Gottfried Mentor.Watch "Oh sheep"

Each of these films portray the following: an immigration, a love and a conflict. All films with laughter and wit decided to present a serious and important matter. The audience were laughing during films, but later comes reflection on what these films really tell. I think in some way they can be for adults or for younger viewers.

Animation has shown once again that it can be used to add great impact and depth to serious topics.Beahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203224230607587802noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8353275515598228032.post-59785949907381077452012-12-04T18:17:00.003+01:002012-12-05T20:55:50.949+01:00BAF 2012 part1
On 13th-19th November there was an animation festival in Bradford.
During these four days I attended the festival. This became a very inspiring experience for me. From morning to evening, you could see all kinds of animation from around the world, listen to lectures and take part in workshops. It was impossible to get bored.
I was impressed by the interview with Robert Morgan. After seeing his animated puppet films notions of paranoia and elements of horror are heavily evident. I found myself watching the video feeling disgusted and at the same time fascinated, and I have to admit that if someone wants to do an animated horror film he or she should use puppets. I find myself, the juxtaposition between the life like nature of puppets and the innocence they contain is what evokes these disturbing emotions . Thus, being perfect for use in horror animations.
My Favorite Film:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybEjyGmVub8Beahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203224230607587802noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8353275515598228032.post-4616462448431954452012-12-04T17:41:00.000+01:002012-12-08T16:20:42.068+01:00The beginning...
This blog will be dedicated to animation because it is my passion and life. I want to improve and develop my skills to create the best 3D animation I can. I will post my own designs and other contemporary films that have inspired me or just seem to me interesting and worth watching.
Even if 3D technology is developing, traditional 2D animation and puppet animation is still abundant in production and is a form that is timeless. Therefore. we could say that traditional technologies do not die, however we can now see blending of modern and traditional forms of animation.
I think we can divide animation in sections of:

stop motion (puppet animation, cut outs), e.g. "ParaNorman" LAIKA,

3D (CGI animation and motion capture), e.g. "Brave" PIXAR, "The Polar Express" WB,

live action and 3D, e.g. "Arthur and the Invisibles" Europa.

Animation, regardless of the technology is used in various fields:

short movie, e.g. "Invetion of love" Andrey Shushkov,
